The Problem
People assume access to groceries is always available, but environmental conditions can quickly make everyday travel difficult, unsafe, or unreliable. Snow, storms, extreme heat, and hazardous road conditions disrupt routines before users adjust their behavior, leaving households unprepared when access to essentials becomes limited.
The Solution
To help users prepare before disruption begins, we created Plan Ahead, a proactive Instacart system powered by real-time environmental data. Using weather alerts, road condition APIs, and forecasted mobility risks, the experience detects when access to groceries may soon become difficult and surfaces personalized Essentials Plans, contextual recommendations, and adaptive delivery timing before conditions worsen. By shifting behavior from reactive to proactive, Plan Ahead transforms Instacart from a delivery service into a system of preparedness, safety, and support during environmental disruptions.
Data On/Data Off
Real time environmental data powers the Plan Ahead system behind the scenes. When conditions such as snowfall, winter storm warnings, hazardous road conditions, extreme heat, or unsafe travel thresholds reach a critical point, the system activates automatically. Instacart then sends proactive notifications prompting users to review their personalized Essentials Plan before access to groceries becomes difficult or unreliable. By responding before disruption begins, the experience shifts users from reactive decision making to proactive preparation.
